"As the operating vendor of Lapland Safaris, I get to carry out in a diverse way even the most special wishes of customers"
My career at Lapland Safaris started in 2011 when I applied for a hospitality management studies internship and got a job in Ylläs. During my internship, I became familiar with various tasks. In November 2013, I came back to do seasonal work, and since then, I have spent winters in Ylläs in various positions: over the years, I have worked the front desk, husky yard, operations and sales, and now as a sales negotiator. For many years, I lived half the year in Ylläs and the other half in Pirkanmaa. Since 2019, I have lived permanently in Äkäslompolo: I first advanced to be the manager of the front desk and from there to my current permanent job as an operating salesperson.
At the moment, I work mainly during office hours on weekdays. Winter is our season, and late spring, summer, and fall we use to prepare for the coming winter. I am responsible for making group reservations and offers, as well as selling accommodation, safaris and restaurant services to customer groups, to give a few examples. I brief guides and make sure that things are implemented as agreed. In the summer, work is calmer, but in the winter, it is sometimes necessary to be available outside working hours: sometimes there may be changes when the group is at the destination even on short notice.
Customer service is my specialty. I try to meet the wishes of the customers, answer all their questions and also help them find services that we do not offer ourselves. We have an extensive network of subcontractors and cooperators here in Ylläs, which I utilize as necessary. Groups often ask about more special restaurant experiences, for example, and the local network helps with this. I work hard in the background and it warms my heart when I hear good feedback from groups about a successful holiday and that the customers have enjoyed it.
We have a top team at work, and that's the best part. There are employees from many different European countries, and many return year after year to the Ylläs winter. There is of course some turnover, but the close team spirit remains and we spend a lot of time together even in our free time, for example doing outdoor activities or having quiz nights.
Before my first internship, I had only been to Lapland once, and I knew almost nothing about the area. During that internship, Ylläs stole my heart. The best thing about this place is nature and the environment, and that's what I marvel at in my free time all year round. There are a lot of fells and nature trails nearby and you can get to them as soon as you step out the door. Lapland is nice and peaceful, and you’re not always in a rush and getting pulled in all directions all at once, like in the city. You can stop by for a local meal wearing sportswear if you want to, for example. I usually spend my summer vacations in Pirkanmaa and abroad, but the autumn leaves period and winter I have to spend in Lapland: I could no longer be anywhere but in Ylläs. When I look at the scenery from the top of the fell, I know why I live in Lapland.
