CAREER STORIES

JANNE KUUSELA

Manager of Ski Operations, Lapland Ski Resort Luosto

"I grew up in Lapland with a snowboard on my feet – by doing what I love, I’ve reached this point in my career without forcing it."

I was born in Rovaniemi, and my career essentially began at the age of 15, snowboarding in Ounasvaara. With youthful confidence, I told the staff that the jumps could be better. Before long, I found myself giving advice on how things should be done, which led me to a job at the resort. I worked in the rental shop, assisted customers at the lifts, and built and maintained jumps – anything a motivated young person could handle.

Year by year, my responsibilities grew, which suited me well, as I’ve always enjoyed taking action rather than standing still. During my studies, I worked evenings and weekends at Ounasvaara, and after graduating, I transitioned to full-time work. Today, I serve as the Slope Manager at Ski Resort Luosto.

It’s easy and safe to feel excited and motivated at work when you know there’s strong support behind you and help is available when you need it. I’ve had the opportunity to develop new operational models and even products for Luosto. The best feeling comes from seeing plans take shape and deliver results. We’ve had a clear vision guiding us for the past six years, and it’s been successful. When the direction is right, it’s easy to keep moving forward. The different concepts and training programs within the chain provide great learning and a solid foundation.

My workdays are varied. On office days, I handle background tasks such as HR, business operations, and planning. Then there are days when I’m making snow, building, or doing maintenance work on the slopes or lifts. One of the most important aspects of this job is staying ahead of the calendar – planning for the coming days, weeks, and even the next season is absolutely essential.

When I’m not at my desk or holding a shovel and hammer, I’m out on the slopes, talking with staff about current topics and what lies ahead. These interactions are crucial for maintaining our team spirit, because this is truly a team effort. We have very low staff turnover, which helps deepen our knowledge of our products, stories, and the resort itself. A strong team spirit and the warm welcome we give to new team members help them quickly realize there’s no need to be nervous. This creates a genuine and warm customer experience as well.

Building a great core team and getting key people to return year after year is incredibly rewarding. Together, we’ve managed to create a strong buzz, drawing in a growing base of loyal customers and enthusiastic weekend and holiday visitors who keep coming back. One piece of feedback that has stayed with me came from parents in one family who thanked us at the end of the season and told us they’d be getting season passes again next year: “Here, you know what you’re going to get –  and you can trust it".
